Today I’m walking you through the messy, necessary task of replacing a chemical pump seal – and yeah, I’ve replaced way more seals than I can count in both our service shop and out in the field, so this isn’t some textbook jargon-heavy garbage. This is what actually works, no fluff, no stuff that’ll leave you mid-job realizing you missed a step. Chemical Pump

First off, let’s cut to the chase: why does a seal matter? If your chemical pump is leaking, that seal’s the culprit 9 times outta 10. Those seals aren’t just rubber rings – they’re the barrier between the pumped chemical (could be corrosive, toxic, whatever) and the atmosphere, plus they keep lubricant in the pump’s bearing housing. Skip replacing it right, and you’re lookin’ at downtime way longer than it takes to do the job right, or worse, a chemical spill that’ll get OSCI breathing down your neck. I’ve seen a guy skip a tiny seal replacement and shut down a whole food processing plant for 3 days ‘cause his pump was squishing hydrochloric acid all over the floor – don’t be that guy.

Let’s start with prep ‘cause rushing this step is how you mess up fast. First thing: lockout/tagout (LOTO) the pump. I don’t care how sure you are the power’s off – grab a padlock, stick it on the breaker, write your name on the tag. No shortcuts here. Next, drain whatever’s left in the pump casing and the piping – residual chemical can eat through your gloves or get all over the parts you’re takin’ apart. While you’re at it, grab your tools: a socket set (standard and metric, trust me), a seal puller kit (don’t try to pry with a screwdriver – you’ll nick the shaft, and that’s a whole other headache), a new seal kit (make sure it’s the EXACT model for your pump – I can’t tell you how many times folks show up with a “close enough” seal and it leaks within a week), some isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, and a bit of food-grade grease (not just any grease – pick one that’s compatible with the seal material, like EPDM or Viton). Oh, and grab a marker – you’ll need it to line parts up later.

Now, takin’ the pump apart step by step. First, disconnect the pump from the motor – usually it’s just a few bolts on the coupling housing. Once that’s off, mark the position of the impeller on the shaft with your marker – that way when you put it back, you don’t mess up the alignment. Loosen the impeller nut – pro tip: if it’s stuck, use a pipe wrench on the shaft (pad the shaft with a rag first so you don’t scratch it) and turn the nut counterclockwise. Once the nut’s off, slide the impeller off the shaft – easy, right? Wait, no – some pumps have a sleeve over the shaft, so make sure you note if that’s there, don’t leave it behind.

Next up, get to the old seal. You’ll see the seal’s two main parts: the stationary seat (that’s pressed into the pump casing) and the rotating face (that’s attached to the shaft/sleeve). This is where that seal puller comes in – slide the puller hooks under the rotating face, don’t dig into the rubber, and pull straight out. For the stationary seat, a soft punch (brass, not steel – steel’ll ding the casing) works if the puller won’t reach. Once both parts are out, grab that isopropyl and clean the shaft and the inside of the casing where the seal sits. If there’s old gasket material or grime, scrape it off gently – a plastic scraper, not metal. Any nicks or scratches on the shaft? Even a tiny one can make the seal leak, so if it’s bad, you’ll need to polish it with steel wool or replace the shaft – don’t skip this.

Now the new seal – this is where people mess up the most. First, check the model number again. If your old seal says “2100-1.75” on it, the new one has to match. If you’re not sure, just send us a pic of the old seal and your pump serial number – we’ll hook you up. Now, the stationary seat: take your small amount of compatible grease and dab a tiny bit on the outer edge of the seat – this helps it slide into the casing without binding. Press it straight in, don’t twist it – if it’s not fully seated, push with a wooden dowel or the back of a socket that’s the right size, tap gently until it’s flush with the casing. No over-tappin’ – that can crack the ceramic face.

The rotating part (the part on the shaft) is trickier. First, slide that shaft sleeve back on if you had one. Dab a little grease on the inner diameter of the rotating seal – don’t use too much, you don’t want it gunking up the works. Align the keyway (if there is one) on the seal with the key on the shaft, then slide it on all the way – don’t hammer it on, use the same wooden dowel to push it gently until it sits against the impeller shoulder. Here’s the big one: the two faces (stationary and rotating) have to be perfectly clean and free of lint. Use a lint-free cloth, not a paper towel – paper towels leave tiny fibers that’ll make the seal leak. Double-check that the rotating seal moves freely on the shaft – if it’s stuck, you greased too much, or it’s misaligned.

Now put the pump back together, in reverse order of taking it apart. First, slide the impeller back on, line up that marker you drew earlier, tighten the impeller nut – just snug it, don’t over-tighten, that can warp the impeller. Put the coupling housing back on, reconnect the pump to the motor. Now, a quick check: align the coupling so there’s no gap or offset – if it’s off, your pump’ll vibrate like crazy, and the seal’ll wear out fast. We sell alignment tools, but even a straight edge works for a quick check.

Now, test it. Fill the pump casing with water first (not the chemical you’re pumpin’ – we do a test run with plain water to catch leaks) and turn the power on. Watch for leaks at the seal within the first 5 minutes. If it’s drippin’ a little – that’s normal for the first few minutes, but if it’s squirtin’, shut it off and check your alignment, or make sure the seal faces are seated right. If it’s dry, you’re good to go – drain the test water and fill it with your actual chemical.

Wait, quick notes: if your pump is handling harsh chemicals (like strong acids, bases), make sure your seal is Viton, not EPDM. EPDM works for water, Viton’s for corrosives. And if you’re not 100% confident takin’ it apart, don’t risk it. We offer on-site service calls and seal replacement kits for every pump model we sell – no guesswork, no wrong parts.

If you’re still stuck, or you need a new seal kit, or you just wanna run a question by us, hit up our team to talk through it.
